Lassus (Lasso), Orlande de: Tutto lo di

for 8 voices or instruments in 2 choirs.

Lassus 8-part Tutto lo di is printed here after the Gardane anthology Dialoghi Musicali de diversi eccellentissimi autori a Sette, Otto, Nove, Dieci, Undeci & Doded Voci, published in Venice in 1590; the collection also features Lassus´ Hor che la nuova e vaga primavera, which is published as no. 54 in the present series.
Tutto lo di is entirely different in character from the somewhat high-flown Hor che la nuova, as it is a villanella rather than a madrigal. In fact it is a recomposition of a 4-part setting of the same text that Lassus published in 1581 (see LPM MA10 for our edition of this version). Essentially Lassus retains most of the rhythmic features of the smaller setting, and occasional harmonic features, but otherwise is quite free in his choice of notes.
In performing this piece, it is important to realise that it is one of the relatively few light-hearted double-choir pieces from its time, so it requires a brisk tempo and clear articulation. When choosing instruments it should be borne in mind that the bass of choir II is sometimes not a real bass in the tuttis. So if one choir is to have a bass instrument an octave lower than its counterpart in the other choir, it must be choir I.
The original note values have been preserved throughout. A few original accidentals have been added: these are printed small above the stave, and apply to one note only.
