Lassus (Lasso), Orlande de: Hor che la nuova

e vaga primavera for 10 voices or instruments in 2 choirs.

Lassus´ Hor che la nuova e vaga primavera is taken from Dialoghi Musicali de diversi eccellentissimi autori a Sette, Otto, Nove, Dieci, Undeci & Dodeci Voci, Venice, 1590. As the title suggests, this collection contains a substantial number of secular double-choir pieces, with works by both Gabrielis, Striggio, Wert, Vecchi, Porta, de Monte, Marenzio and others.
The spacing of the parts in Lassus´ piece is actually quite subtle: by pitching the upper choir slightly higher than the lower, the two groups dovetail beautifully in the tuttis, giving a satisfying rich sonority. And he has very little in the way of straightforward antiphonal imitation, preferring to have somewhat contrasting music in each choir.
This piece works slightly better if there is a clear distinction in colour between the choirs: for instance recorders and strings in choir I, and strings and trombones, or recorders and trombones (or curtals) in choir II. When voices are used, it is not obligatory to have all parts sung: if we believe Praetorius (Syntagma Musicum) it was acceptable to have only one or two parts in each choir performed vocally; another alternative would be to have a solo singer and instruments in one choir, and an a cappella group in the other.
The original note values have been retained throughout.
