Gabrieli, Giovanni: Chiar´Angioletta

for 8 voices or instruments in 2 choirs.

Giovanni Gabrieli´s Chiar´ Angioletta is taken from Dialoghi Musicali de diversi eccellentissittii autori a Sette, Otto, Nove, Dieci, Undeci & Dodeci Voci, Venice, 1590. This piece seems to be based loosely on Clemens non Papa´s chanson Frais (frisque) et gaillard, originally published in Paris in 1541 (printed in LPM REP3a); Clemens´ piece was certainly known in Italy, as it figures prominently in the diminution repertoire; there are divisions by Girolamo Dalla Casa and Giovanni Bassano, as well as keyboard settings by Andrea Gabrieli (pub. 1605) and Sperindio Bertoldo (1591).
The original note values have been retained in the main portion of the piece, but halved in the triple-time section starting at bar 24, where the original time-signature is a simple 3. I am grateful to Peggy Forsyth for translating the text of this piece.
Clilar´ Angioletta has the unusual heading, “Aria da sonar”, which suggests instrumental performance, at least as an option. In fact the piece is stylistically halfway between a madrigal and a canzon da sonar, and so lends itself to many performing methods. Of course it can be done purely vocally, or purely instrumentally (recorders, violins, cornetts and sackbuts, etc.); but equally, it is possible to mix voices and instruments, either by separating them into the two choirs, or introducing voices on one or two parts in each choir.
