The complete 6-part fantasias are perhaps best understood as textless "cries". Cranford, in his position as Lay Vicar at St. Paul's, London, lived in an environment where the anthems of the church must have been interwoven with the more rhythmic and irreverent street songs drifting in from outside: his fantasias seem to reflect this often uneasy coexistence.
