Byrd, William: Pavan and Galliard
for 5 instruments.
The recent discovery of William Byrd´s hitherto incomplete 5-part pavan in a manuscript in Kassel (Mus. MS 125) has allowed us to present the piece complete here, replacing the restored version printed earlier. British Library Add. MS 37402-6, which lacks the quintus, is still used as the main source, with the missing part supplied from Kassel. The galliard is still based solely on the keyboard version in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, and therefore is seriously open to question.
