Gabrieli´s impressive O che felice giorno is taken from the Gardane anthology Dialoghi Musicali de diversi eccellentissimi autori a Sette, Otto, Nove, Dieci, Undeci & Dodeci Voci, published in Venice in 1590. Its strength and rhythmic charm derive from its excellent word-setting. A particularly unusual effect is the imitation of bagpipes in the triple section, with a sustained drone that results in quite unconventional but charming harmonies. The original note values have been retained in the main part of this work, but halved in the triple-time sections, where the original time-signature is a 3. An occasional editorial accidental appears printed small above the stave. applying to the one note only.
