for 8 instruments in 2 choirs.
These two toccate are taken from Aurelio Bonelli´s fl Plitno Libro de Ricercari et canzoni a quattro voci con due toccate e doi dialoghi a otto, published in Venice in 1602. Six of the 4-part canzonas can be found in LPM VM15. The original note values have been retained in the duple-time portions of these pieces, but halved in the triple-time sections, which have the time-signature 3/2 in both pieces. In Athalanta there is a passage that occurs in both choirs (bars 31 and 35) which contains an unresolved dominant seventh chord. After a little thought I decided to give Bonelli´s printer the benefit of the doubt, but if this passage causes any anguish, the source of the pain can be removed by changing the c' in the alto part to a d'.
